Speakers Paul Cooper, L.P., Susan Rudnick, CSW, Tony Stern, MD, Dorothy Yang, LCSW
Topic The Buddhist Impulse in Psychotherapeutic Encounter
Contents All psychotherapeutic discourse is an autobiographical narrative, whether we attempt to conceal it within a scientific language or not. However, the more concealed the autobiographical narrative becomes, the less impact it exerts. Without considering the personal spiritual, we are left with a fractured and less than whole psychotherapy. It is from this perspective that the panelists will discuss practical, spiritual, and personal aspects of their journey as psychotherapists and spiritual practitioners. Panelists will address questions Such as: "What emotions are being defended against by the overly rationalized and reasoned language of the scientific model?" "What is the risk that the psychotherapist takes in using an approach to language that integrates both scientific and mystical models without privilege?" These questions are essential to any discussion of contemplative experience and the psychotherapeutic encounter if we are to take the radical potential for salvation of legitimate spiritual traditions seriously.
